Wood Bay Studio
Wood Bay Studio in Titirangi, Auckland offers pottery classes for adults and children. We offer a range of classes at different times so it’s best to check out the website links above depending on what you want.
COVID 19 INFORMATION:
To protect our students against COVID-19, at the present we require masks to be worn in all our adult classes unless otherwise stated* by whoever is facilitating the class. Because of this, we ask all our adult students to bring a mask with them. We space our chairs and our wheels so that all students are distanced by 1m in class and we will not have more than 10 people in our studio for any of our classes, in accordance of following Level 2 community guidelines. In addition we sanitise our surfaces between classes. All of this is done to create a safe and relaxed environment for our students and teachers, we thank you for your understanding.
*The only reason we may not require masks for a class is if we are hosting a much smaller class. In this case you are still most welcome to wear a mask if you wish.
Our classes are very relaxed and we learn to ‘play’ and create awesome pieces. Wood Bay Studio is well organized and in a lovely peaceful environment with bird song and cicadas depending on the time of the year. I love the happiness and sense of achievement people get from creating their own amazing projects. On the other hand I am happy to guide people if they are needing ideas whilst teaching them individual skills and extending them. Teaching is always done in a maximum group of seven people so that everyone can be given individualized help. I’d love to share with you my passion of working with pottery! We all inspire each other within the classes and would love you to be part of a class.
Friday morning classes are currently on hold whilst we find another teacher as I am studying at present. There is normally regular 5 week blocks which are ideal to get a few projects done and glaze some items.
There are regular Friday night classes from 7.00 – 9.30pm, as well which are fun with a glass of bubbles or a beer and nibbles. This is a great way to end the week! You can attend these regularly if you wish to consolidate your skills and keep creating each week or make the first session and reschedule 3-4 weeks later to glaze your pieces after your items have dried and been fired the first time). These sessions are fun and only $65 each night. Class sizes are 7 maximum. This includes your clay, glazes and 2 firings.
You will learn different methods of handbuilding with pinch pots, slab work and the basics of joining pottery and using under glazes or pouring or dipping glazes. You can also learn the basics of using a pottery wheel as well. If you have your own ideas of what to make I can help guide you to make your own projects if they are within your skill level. You don’t need to be an artistic or creative person because I help everyone to make pieces they are proud of.
For children aged from 7 years and up, there are after school classes from 3.15 – 5pm with afternoon tea on a Wednesday or Thursday.. I also hold occasional holiday programmes as well. These classes are fun but also great for teaching children basic pottery skills and lifelong skills of focus, perseverance and creativity. Children will get to experience the whole process of pottery with creating and then using underglazes or glazes. I use my previous experience and skills as an enthusiastic and experienced primary school teacher to create a positive encouraging environment with independence encouraged.
